This is an imaginary coastal scene along the north shore of Boston in 19th century New England. Several activities are noted in the painting from conversations around Ma Toff's market, chimney smoke from the smoke house in the back shed, ( figure on lower left is going to the smokehouse with the pig), a barbershop ,a tavern, clothes hanging out to dry, tending to the garden and even cormorants sunning themselves on the rocks while watching in the boating activities.
