Harvest Jug

15" tall x 7" wide

Inspired by face jugs first made in the 19th century in South Carolina. Unlike traditional face jugs this double spouted harvest jug has no clay added to the outside surface of the pieces except for the handle and spouts.

The facial features are sculpted from the inside. I turn a closed form and cut the piece above the bottom of the pot and reach through the hole and sculpt everything from the inside - pushing out for the nose, lips, ears and cheeks. I then cut a slit for each eye and reach in to push out the sockets. Porcelain eyes are made and set in the sockets. This process makes a much more expressive face. The bottom is reattached and the spouts and handle are added.

This piece has a hand made ash glaze and amber glass runs down the spouts. Each one I make is one of a kind.
