one-of-a-kind
Stick Figures is a project I've been working on off and on for about six years. While this is a departure from my traditional carved pieces, its foundation comes from my early days of doing more raw and primitive work. Mostly found objects and recycled materials are used for the bodies of these figures, while the heads, hands and a few other miscellaneous parts are hand carved and painted wood. I love using these old materials, whether it's an old camera, wooden spindle, or a buggy wheel. Because of their age, these things have warmth, beauty and soul, despite what their original purpose may have been. With the exception of cutting pieces to size, these materials are pretty much left unchanged, with their original wear and patina left to celebrate. And while these objects most likely had nothing to do with each other in their previous life, my goal is to bring them together in a meaningful, cohesive, and beautiful way.
Big Wheel is made with a nod to old puppets and toys using a combination of recycled materials including an old buggy wheel, which is turned into a unicycle. The head, hands and feet are carved wood.
