Wash Ashore
4 3/8" diameter
3" high basket, 6" high to top of handle
The influence of this piece is a humorous play on words of the term wash ashore and its relation to one of the elements of the basket. The basket has two rounds of baleen weavers which came from a deceased right whale which washed ashore on Nantucket in the Madaket area many years ago. I was given a piece of it to repair a basket and have used it sparingly over the years. The bottom of this little basket is made from the mahogany lapstraking of a cc.1920 Chris Craft. The basket is woven of 50 year old recycled cane.
