Queen of Hearts
12" tall
Silver sword by Linda Leigh Linton.
While many of my works were based on folk art sculptures of the 19th century, the main decorative influence for the Queen of Hearts was playing cards. I found a small book about the history of playing card designs at a flea market and used it as a starting point. I would return to it often when I needed "a spark."
Although the basic design was wood burned on the carving, how each section would be decorated was an ongoing creative process. I used ideas from the antique cards, dangling bead techniques used on old trade store figures, and ornaments left over from previous works of mine. The Queen of Hearts is perhaps the most detailed work I ever created - and for me, a masterpiece.
