Spring

10.25" diameter, 16" x 16" framed

Spring is one of my "seasonal" papercuttings, complete with kites flying overhead, quilts airing on the clothesline and a brand new foal frolicking in the fields. I freehand cut this "scherenschnitte" papercutting from a single sheet of black silhouette paper using surgical scissors. The intricate border work is a specialty of mine, similar to the intricate European scissorcuts found in museums. My challenge is to create an extremely delicate cutting with lines that are no thicker than thread-width and tell a story in the various levels within the cutting. After the cutwork is complete, I add top layers of colored art paper to pattern the miniature quilts and an underlayer of red paper to highlight the tulip border. I think these colored focal points draw the eye into the picture.
